The importance of friendships and sisterhood for women in retirement

My friend Brigitte Clement joins us today with her first post to this site. Brigitte also retired recently from a career in social work. Today she shares with us her first of what I hope is many tidbits.

Thank you Brigitte.

A sisterhood

By Brigitte Clement

There is increasing research confirming that female friendships are critical to women's health and happiness as it links us to social support, increases our self-esteem and inspires hope.

It seems especially critical as we head into retirement to stay connected and to be well surrounded. Female friendships are a powerful bond which is often unmatched. The beauty of these relationships is that it offers not only support but also an emotional connection; a sense of sisterhood. It allows us to be vulnerable and to receive advice through life's many challenges and to celebrate the small victories of everyday life. It allows us to laugh together and not to take life too seriously. Laughter is so  healing, even during the most difficult periods in our lives. It can truly be magical.
The circle of friends does not need to be a large one. In my opinion, a smaller circle can lead to more meaningful relationships.
I'm certain that friendships amongst men offer similar benefits but I can only speak to my experience.  Men, I wish you the same level of connection, the many laughs and the much needed support.
Women, come together and be intentional in your relationships and let the magic happen!

Your friend,

Brigitte

  1. Thank you Brigitte for taking the time to share your thoughts and inspiration on this topic. I am sure that you will inspire more women and men of course to nurture long lasting friendships. I know that Nicole and I have enjoyed our friendship with you and Dave. You both are a special part of our lives.
Creating special friendships takes time and is definitely a proactive activity. When you invest time nurturing these relationships it pays big dividends in your life. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts.
